জৈন তীর্থঙ্কর ঋষভ জৈন ধর্ম প্রথম প্রচার করেন যা ঋকবেদে উল্লেখিত আছে।বিষ্ণুপুরাণ এবং ভাগবত পুরান ঋষভদেবকে নারায়নের মানব অবতার হিসেবে বর্ণনা করা আছে।
জৈনধর্ম অত্যন্ত প্রাচীন এবং জৈন ধর্মে 24জন তীর্থঙ্কর এর অস্তিত্ব সম্বন্ধে জানা যায়।
প্রথম তীর্থঙ্কর ছিলেন ঋষভদেব যিনি অযোধ্যায় জন্মেছিলেন। ঋষভদেব ই প্রথম শৃংখলাবদ্ধ মানবিক সমাজ গড়ে তুলেছিলেন এবং উপলব্ধি করেছিলেন যে জৈন দর্শনের মূল হলেন আদিনাথ।
23 তম তীর্থঙ্কর হলেন পার্শ্বনাথ এবং 24 তম শেষ তীর্থঙ্কর ছিলেন বর্ধমান মহাবীর।
মহাবীর 540 খ্রীষ্টপূর্বাব্দে বৈশালী নগরীর উপকন্ঠে কুন্দগ্রাম বর্তমানে মজফফরপুর জেলার বসার গ্রামে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন।
মহাবীরের পরিবারের সঙ্গে মগধের রাজবংশ সম্পর্ক ছিল।
30 বছর পর্যন্ত মহাবীর গৃহীর জীবনযাপন করেন এবং তারপর সত্যের সন্ধানে সংসারের মায়ার বাঁধন ছিন্ন করেন।
42 বছর বয়সে তিনি কৈবল্য লাভ করেন।
পরেশনাথ পাহাড় এর কাছে গ্রামের উপকণ্ঠে ঋজু বালিকা নদীর তীরে একটি শাল গাছের তলায়। সন্ন্যাস গ্রহণের 13 বছরে তিনি এই কৈবল্য লাভ করেন। ‘কৈবল্য’ লাভের পর তিনি ‘মহাবীর’ অর্থাৎ শ্রেষ্ঠ বীর নামে পরিচিত হন।

মহাবীর বেদের আচার-অনুষ্ঠান ও জাতিভেদ প্রথার যৌক্তিকতা স্বীকার করেন না। বিশ্বস্রষ্টা ঈশ্বরের অস্তিত্বে তাঁরা বিশ্বাসী নন।
এমনকি কৃষিকার্যকেও জৈনরা একটি পাপকার্য বলে মনে করেন কারণ কৃষিকাজের জন্য পৃথিবী জীবজন্তু ও পোকামাকড়ের ক্ষতি হয়।
তপস্যার জন্য আত্মার মুক্তির জন্য কৃচ্ছসাধন দরকার এর জন্য প্রয়োজন শারীরিক ক্লেশ,অনশন।
মহাবীর বর্ণ প্রথা কে দোষারোপ করতেন না যেমন বৌদ্ধধর্মে করা হত। তিনি বলতেন পূর্বজন্মের কৃতকর্মই ঠিক করে দেয় এ জন্মে কে উচ্চবর্ণ, কে নিম্নবর্ণ জাত হবে।
